Heinz Burgschmidt

Heinz died peacefully surrounded by loving family at Sherbrooke Community Centre. Heinz is predeceased by his loving wife, Ilse. Heinz is survived by his children Hans (Martha), Gordon (Judy) and Linda Wirt; his grandchildren Gina, Robbi (A.J), Lisa (Jordy) and Kevin; and his great-granddaughter, Freya Aucoin.

Heinz grew up in war-time Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1954 to settle in Winnipeg. In 1967, the family moved to Saskatoon and lived in Brevoort Park at the time when Highway 11 to Regina was the very eastern border of Saskatoon. Heinz was a draftsman and engineer at Intercontinental Packers until his retirement. Heinz was a conscientious and dedicated husband and father. He had a tremendous love for the outdoors, which he shared with his children. Heinz always had a smile on his face, something that went with his generous spirit. Heinz loved a project, of which he had many, such as the construction of the family cottage at Candle Lake. After retiring, Heinz and Ilse split their time between their two favourite places: their winter home in Arizona and their cottage at Candle Lake. Heinz was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in his mid-60’s but continued to enjoy his travels for many years.

We are grateful that Heinz was able to reside at Sherbrooke Community Centre for the last 3 years. Sherbrooke’s overall philosophy and orientation to elder care is exceptional and has made such a difference in Heinz’s golden years. On behalf of the family, we are grateful for the kindness and compassion expressed to our father from the residents and the incredible care teams of House 7, the Recreational Coordinators, the Occupational Therapists, the Physiotherapists and the entire health care team, with special thanks to those who brought music to Heinz’s life.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon.
