Obituary of Delmer Downing

Del passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 13 at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon after a very brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Reta (Taylor) Downing. Also by his three sisters, Myrna (Ron) Sanheim of Fillmore; Norma (Norman Dunsmore) of Yellow Grass; and Darlene Morin of Weyburn; his niece Shea (Russ) Mellow, children Carson and Evyn; his nephew Heath Morin, children Kylie and Kruze. He is also survived by numerous cousins, Reta's family and many close friends who became extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Ed and mother, Ilene. He was born at Osage, Sask and was raised in Fillmore. He attended STI in Moose Jaw and had a long and varied career in Geotechnical Engineering. Projects took him to every corner of this province, and around the world. He enjoyed recounting his adventures, having had many good ones. His favorite part was coming home to his beautiful yard and garden, which he took such great pride in maintaining. He loved kids and they were invariably drawn to him. Always with a kind heart, helping hand and story to tell, Del truly loved the young, the old and the furry alike. Retired 10 years, he continued to do some consulting and part time work. Del and Reta were able to travel extensively over the past 30 years. Saving the best for last, a 6 week journey to New Zealand and Australia in 2015. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. Memorial donations in his honour may be made to “NASHI”, 535 8th Street E. Saskatoon, S7H 0P9, or Village of Fillmore (Cemetary Fund) PO Box 185 Fillmore, Sk S0G 1N0.
