Ann Mclaughlan-Aitken

Ann Margaret McLaughlan - Aitken. (nee O’Gorman)

1942 - 2017

Following her battle with cancer, Ann passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon on December 10, 2017.

Ann was born in Ottawa, Ontario on April 30, 1942. In October of I964 she married her high school sweetheart, John (Michael) McLaughlan. The following year Ann had her son and also graduated from nursing at the Royal Victoria hospital in Montreal, Quebec.

Shortly thereafter Ann and family moved to Washington, D.C. where her daughter was born. After a number of years, Ann and family returned to Canada where she worked as a nurse, then as a clerk with the federal of public works until she retired. Following the passing of her first husband, Ann found happiness again when she married Tom Aitken in August of 2000.

Throughout the years Ann was known for her days on the Aylmer High School basketball team, her occasional game of golf, her enjoyment of Neil Diamond and CCR, the love of her family, and her pets among which she always had a special fondness for her cats.

Ann is survived by her son Michael; daughter-in-law Sylvia; her grandchildren Ian, Samuel, Kevin, and Shannon; her great grand-daughter Chloe Elizabeth; her brother Tom; sister-in-law Pearl; and nephew Jim and nieces Sheri and Samantha.

She is predeceased by her parents Alice and Tom; her first husband Mike; her daughter Wendy and son-in-law Jeff; and her second husband Tom.

The family is grateful to the staff, nurses, and other caregivers at Diamond House in Warman, and the Royal University Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon.

In lieu of flowers and should friends desire, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, or Alzheimer’s Society are always appreciated.

A Special Post Script to Ann’s Life and Legacy.

One story that Ann, quietly shared with family during her time as a nurse was when she was working for Dr. Gluck who was Maggie Trudeau’s obstetrician. On one of Maggie’s visits to her doctor, her young son Justin Trudeau was waiting with Ann in the office area and due to the Trudeau’s busy schedule Justin was quite hungry so Ann shared one of her lunch sandwiches with him. Young Justin began eating so rapidly that he quickly found himself unable to breathe, with a piece of the sandwich firmly lodged in his throat. But being quick to action, Ann was able to dislodge the sandwich and had him back breathing and in good spirits before his mother emerged from the patient room.

Funeral Details

At Ann’s request no formal service will be held.

However friends and family are encouraged to make the most of their days and not let any moments escape without letting a family member know how much they are loved, or how much a friendship is appreciated and valued.
