Prefontaine, Anne

June 5, 1925 – January 8, 2019

Anne Prefontaine (nee Szentmiklossy) died peacefully at age 93 on January 8 2019, surrounded by her three children, Denis (Mary) Cheryl and Adam, Elaine (Doug)   Patrick and Gregory, Gisele (Mike) Christopher and Ian.  Anne grew up in St. Brieux, SK.  Her parents (Mike and Annie) were Hungarian immigrants who instilled in her and her 3 brothers, Les, Mike and Frank, the values of hard work and helping others.  Anne went on to become a teacher after attending Normal School in Saskatoon and taught in one room schools in rural Saskatchewan and Alberta.  She was very fond of her students and often recalled times spent with them.  In 1950, Anne and Clarence married and were together for 44 years, until his passing.  She supported and assisted Clarence in the road construction business throughout central Saskatchewan.  Anne and Clarence eventually settled in Domremy and had a circle of good friends.  They enjoyed winter vacations in Florida and Arizona and spending time at their cabin at Wakaw Lake.  Anne was active in the C.W.L. and volunteered in the community.  She loved gardening, canning, sewing, needle work and baking and was known especially for her home made buns.  At the age of 50, she began oil painting and had a real talent for it.  She was very proud that one of her paintings of a bouquet of the floral emblems of each of the provinces and territories in Canada, went on to be presented to the Governor General of Canada and hung in Rideau Hall.  Anne and Clarence moved to Saskatoon in 1978 after they retired.  Anne loved being in the city and held part-time jobs as she wanted to stay busy and engaged.

Anne was curious, bright and tenacious.  She had a great sense of style and loved being with people.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Extendicare Resident Council, 2225 Preston Ave., Saskatoon, SK S7J 2E7. We are grateful for the loving care staff at Preston Extendicare provided to mom over the past two years.  Anne’s immediate family will have a celebration of her life at a later date.
