Carl Peter Hanson
August 4, 1928 - August 15, 2024
With heavy hearts and cherished memories, the family of Carl Peter Hanson, who passed away at the age of 96 on August 15, 2024, announces his passing.
Carl was predeceased by his parents, Hartvig and Marie (Helleson) Hanson, his infant daughters Janice and Brenda, son Greg, brothers Gordon and John, and sisters Mary Kruger, Jean Nelson, and Lil Boothman.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 72 years, Doris (Marchbank) Hanson, and his sons Rick (Melanie) and their family (David, Naomi, Tyler, Alex, Trey, Skye), (Michael), (Danny, Jill, Louie), (Emma, Braxton), and Randy (Jan) and their family (Zara, Dale, Levi), (Zoe, Corbin), and Jeff (Christie) and their family (Sam, Austin), Doug (Glenda), and Steve (Kim) and their family (Tayler, Tegan, Tayven). Carl is also survived by his sister Fern Dowse and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born in Mossbank on August 4, 1928, Carl's early years were shaped by the challenging life on the family farm in Expanse, where his parents had settled after emigrating from Copenhagen in 1924. He attended public school in Expanse and completed high school in Moose Jaw. Carl developed his love for sports while growing up on the ball diamond and basketball court and proudly competed with his peers and friends.
Family and friends were among Carl’s top priorities. He delighted in being the elder of a large family, often bringing laughter and tears to gatherings with huge tubs of jujubes, his golden kazoo and the original poems he meticulously crafted and recited for every family occasion. He affectionately referred to himself as the “Old Goat”, a role he embraced with humor and love.
Carl also enjoyed trailering, winemaking, woodworking with the Kiwanis, and playing cards. He loved striking up conversations, making new friends and acquaintances everywhere his errands took him, as well on his many trips with Doris.
Carl was deeply committed to his community, dedicating countless hours to volunteer work with Kiwanis, where he served in several leadership roles, as well as the Salvation Army, United Way, Saskatchewan Abilities Council, and the Saskatoon Blades. In his work life, he dedicated 40 years to the wholesale food industry, working with Scott National in Moose Jaw, Regina, and Saskatoon.
A true sports enthusiast, Carl loved participating in golfing, ten-pin bowling, curling, and was the quintessential hockey parent. His passion for the Saskatoon Blades was unwavering; he listened to nearly every game on his transistor radio and kept up to date with WHL and major sports league standings, and always knew what happened in “last night’s game”.
Carl will be deeply missed, and his legacy of humor and dedication to community will continue to impact all those who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday September 12, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the W.A. Edwards Family Centre (333 4th Avenue North, Saskatoon), courtesy parking at Saskatoon Funeral Home.
