Eleanor Ehman

Ehman, Loraine

1935 - 2024

It is with tender sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Loraine Ehman on December 24th, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Mom will be ever loved and missed by her four children, Dale, Bryan (Barb), Bruce (Lisa) and Teresa (Lorne), her 8 grandchildren, Justine (Chris), Patrick (Drew), Bobby (Kennedy), Jillian (Josh), Alex, Josh, Rebecca, and Hunter, and her 3 great grandchildren, Eila, Ryleigh, and Boston.

Mom was born January 27th, 1935 at City Hospital in Saskatoon. She spent her early childhood on the family farm at Asquith, Saskatchewan with her brother (Tom) and sister (Marjorie) who were much older than her. This led to her having an affinity for and many fond memories of her kitties and bunny rabbits leading to a lifelong love of animals.

After moving to Saskatoon, she attended City Park High School. She pursued her love of figure skating, leading to a treasured chapter in her life with the Ice Fantasy Ice Show. She traveled throughout Canada and the U.S.

Mom and Dad soon met, and they were married in 1958 in Saskatoon where she started a life as a hockey wife. It involved many moves in Canada and the U.S., but always returning to Saskatoon in the summers as her and Dad's true home.

Packing 4 kids around, dealing with earthquakes, trees falling in California, snowstorms in Rochester, and going into labour on a flight from Toronto back to Saskatoon were some of these events. Sometimes even feeding many single hockey players Dad would randomly bring home unannounced. She dealt with many situations and emergencies, often on her own.

Mom's strength anchored the family with Dad's busy travel schedule. With four kids going in many directions, she often put everyone's needs ahead of her own. How blessed and grateful we are to have had that kind of motherly support. Mom, Dad and our family enjoyed many good years in Saskatoon with numerous special memories shared with the Michasiw family, the Beaulieu family in Vonda and traditional Christmas Day gatherings with extended family.

Wakaw Lake was a special retreat for both Mom and Dad and was a lifelong dream they shared. Many enjoyable times were spent golfing, boating, barbequing, and entertaining family and friends over the years. We have many sweet memories of Mom and Dad in their lounge chairs on the front deck talking, while listening to Waylon and Willie playing on the 8-track.

Mom had a quiet nature, and often operated behind the scenes. Making sure that we were taken care of with wonderful meals, a listening ear and always good advice for us. She had immense practical and common sense and believed strongly in fairness and forgiveness based on an admirable moral compass. She treasured her independence and in her last few years, was able to live in her home with the help of her family and homecare support. Mom endured several health challenges after Dad's passing. She was a tough prairie gal that showed her generation's strength and resilience. Mom was the wind beneath the wings for her husband and children. Her concern and love for her family continued to her very last day.

The family would like to thank the many caregivers at RUH, the Saskatchewan Homecare Team and Village Rose for their support for Mom.

A Liturgy Service for Loraine will be held on Saturday, January 4th at 11:00 am at St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church (1902 Munroe Avenue South). A private family interment at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Saskatoon SPCA (https://saskatoonspca.com/donate).
