On January 31, 2023, Fern Isabel Smart got her wings and went to walk with the angels and play Bingo with her late momma.
Fern passed away peacefully, with the love of her family surrounding her.
It would be wrong to say that Fernie lost her battle because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was, she was always determined. When anyone else would have broken, Fernie stayed strong. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly looks like. There was no quiet in Fernie.
Our mom was an incredible person. We feel very lucky to have been her son and daughter, granddaughter and great-grandson and we want to express our gratitude to her for everything she did for us.
Our mother Fernie, as most called her, was loved by so many. She always knew how to brighten someone's day and make them feel loved. She treated everyone with kindness and respect. She rarely got mad and when she did, you knew she had a darn good reason! (“Don't bug with me " was her favourite phrase).
Her outlook on life was inspiring. If you were lucky to spend more than five minutes in her presence, you were forever changed. We are so grateful to have had a mother who embraced each day with optimism, kindness and unconditional love. We rarely express our gratitude for someone. Our mom made sure we always knew how much she cared. She reminded us every day how important we were to her. I knew she loved us because she took the time to tell us.
Anyone who knew her knew that she was a star in her families eyes, and that’s all that ever mattered to her. Fernie loved her girls to death, Karen and Kayla, and they could do no wrong.
She thrived on being stunning, always dolled up; her hair, make-up and clothes, even if just to sit around the house doing puzzles and watching her favorite TV shows.
Fern is survived by her son, Wayne (Glen) who were her main men in her life; her loving daughter, Karen (Dale); her beautiful granddaughter Kayla; her amazingly great great-grandson, Walker; her favorite sister-in-law, Betty Ann Smart, whom Fernie always held a special spot in her heart for; her daughter-in-law, Bonnie (Grant) and grandchildren, Chantel, Chaston, Braedyn and their families; and son-in-law, Brian and grandchildren, Jamie and Jason and their families. Fern was predeceased by her husband, James; daughter, Joanne; and sons, Brian, Kevin, and Keith.
Our mom was an amazing woman, bringing light to everyone around her, and she will be deeply missed.
Love and missing you Already. Wayne, Glen, Karen, Kayla, Walker, and her favorite boys Zeus and Thor.
Special thanks and Gratitude to the many Doctors, Specialists, Nurses, the medical teams and all the amazing health care workers whom attended to Fern’s care at RUH Hospital.
In lieu of a traditional memorial service, Fern has requested a “Private Family Internment”, which will take place at a later date.
