Gustav Kurtz

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Left behind to cherish his memory is his wife Herta Lanzer Kurtz and her son Gary (Cheryl) Lanzer, his four daughters Catherine (Lorne) Klassen, Lynn (Ian) Rankin, Shari (Garry) Klassen, Holly Mayes (Brent Helgert), 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, his brother Paul (Hedwig) Kurtz, many nieces and nephews and countless friends.

Gustav was born in Blogie, Poland, as the second youngest of seven children to Edward and Maria Kurtz.

In search of a new life and opportunity, Gustav immigrated to Canada in February, 1952.  He made his home in Saskatoon, where he found love, marring Ellen Ablass on January 12, 1957.  Following Ellen’s untimely passing Dad was blessed again to find love, marrying Herta Lanzer on December, 1995.

In 1967, Gustav received his papers as a journeyman sheet metal worker.  He worked for several different contractors in the Metal Fabrication Industry.  In his retirement, Dad continued to fill his days lending a hand to his family and friends whenever needed.

Dad enjoyed life to the fullest and was happiest in nature.  He loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping.

As a member of the Hunter’s Club he spent endless hours on the shooting range and organizing festivals and picnics on the clubs land.  Dad enjoyed sports and was an avid curler and soccer player.  His basement trophy room was a testament to his many achievements and competitive spirit.

Playing cards was a mainstay at family events.  Dad loved a good game of Kaiser and was quick to school everyone on the strategy of the game.  He also loved his Skat Club Card night every Wednesday.

Gustav was a founding member of the German Canadian Club Concordia on Lorne Avenue.  He spent countless hours volunteering his time and expertise in support of the clubs many events and activities including Folkfest.

In honour of his wishes the family will host a backyard come and go tea from 1:30 – 4:00 pm on Sunday Many 27, 2018 at 221 Avenue V. North.  We invite you to bring a lawn chair and your favorite Gus story.
