Pat was born May 7, 1941, in Timmins, Ontario. The family moved west to Vawn, Saskatchewan, in 1947, where the concept of “it takes a village to raise a child” was clearly evident. She was a top student in Vawn school, excelling in math. She would have loved to study engineering, but the cost of 4 years of university was prohibitive. One year at Teachers College started a career as a math teacher that began in Saskatchewan and took her as far east as Newfoundland and northwest to Banks Island in the Beaufort Sea.
She pursued many interests through her life, investing in walls of books and gadgets that she used to explore everything from photography to desserts to northern parkas. Pat was an avid reader until dementia robbed her of that simple pleasure, but music continued to move her to the end.
She was an ever-supportive sister to Helen Hails (Bruno) and Diane, a much loved and indulgent aunt to Chris, Jay (Angela: Keisha and Sierra), Charlene, Heather, Joanne (Sarah and Kieran), Erin O’Connor (Edmund: Tommy, Fergus and Ally), and Patty (Christine: Rose and Lily). She was predeceased by her parents, Everal and Mildred (Baldwin) Smith and a brother Ted.
Project Lifesaver Saskatoon gave Pat’s family peace of mind and would benefit from donations in support of their work.
A Funeral Liturgy of the Word service will be celebrated on Monday, May 22, 2023 at 10:30 am at the Cathedral of the Holy Family Queen of Peace Chapel (123 Nelson Road). Interment will take place at St Hippolyte Cemetery, Vawn, SK at a later date.
