Verna Jean Bains

1929 — March 27, 2020

Verna Bains was born on August 13, 1929 in Wolseley Saskatchewan, the eldest of 2 daughters born to Russell and Beatrice Chatterson, “the best parents anyone could have”.  She attended school in Wolseley and district and after graduation attended Regina College and the U of S, convocating in 1951.  She then worked for approximately 3 years for the Department of Social Services.  During summer employment at Fort San she met Norman Bains and they were married on October 25, 1952 in Wolseley, a marriage that lasted for almost 62 years until Norm passed away in 2014.

Norman and Verna had 4 children:  Brenda (Lyle) Bodman, Greg (Pamela) Bains, Sandra (Brian) Thompson and Warren (Carmen) Bains.  They lived in Lucky Lake for 11 years where Norm bought grain and farmed, then returned to Wolseley to the Chatterson family farm for 27 years until retirement.  During that period Verna worked in the Health Records Department at the Wolseley Hospital for 25 years and always said that she enjoyed every minute of it.

Verna enjoyed many community activities in both Lucky Lake and Wolseley, making many friends along the way.  One group that she particularly enjoyed was the Photography Club in Wolseley.  She created many lovely landscape photos of the area and also of the sights on the many trips that Verna and Norm took.  Verna’s final trip was a cruise down the Danube River in Europe last September.  Brenda, Lyle and Sandra will cherish the wonderful times they had with Verna on that trip.

Norm and Verna made the decision in 2012 to move to Saskatoon to be near family, a family that has been a godsend to them these past 8 years in so many ways.

During Verna’s short illness, her days were brightened by the cards, phone calls and visits of so many friends and family.  She felt blessed by the kindness shown her.  Verna also wants the residents and staff of Luther Riverside Terrace to know that she is so grateful to have been able to spend the last 8 years with them.  She has met so many exceptional people and made wonderful friends.

Verna was predeceased by her parents, her husband Norman Bains, her brother-in-law Ron Brown, and her niece Lori-Ann Belanger.  She leaves to cherish her memory  her sister Doreen Brown and Doreen’s son Craig; and Verna’s children and their families:  Brenda (Lyle) Bodman [Lana (Sheldon) Wohlberg and Adam Bodman]; Greg (Pamela) Bains [Lauren and Adam (Mike)]; Sandra (Brian) Thompson [Michael (Anna) and Mason (Madison)]; Warren (Carmen) Bains [Natasha (Jeff) Hritzuk, Kristina (Mike) MacKenzie and Alex (Tasha) Bains]; and 6 wonderful great grandchildren:  Kayla & Danika Hritzuk, Emma & Will MacKenzie, and Mila & Sophie Thompson.

If anyone should want to make a donation in her memory, please send it to Luther Riverside Terrace, 915 Saskatchewan Crescent West, Saskatoon S7M 0M7.

At Verna’s request there will be a private family service at a future date.
