Obituary of Bernard Bishop

Bernard Bishop passed away in Saskatoon SK. at St. Paul’s Hospital on April 4, 2024 at age 79. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gloria, children Jason (Stephanie), Nicola (Steve), Brandon (Kerry); grandchildren Dylan (Jessie), Braydon (Faith), Tyson (Jordan), Zachary, Simon, Max, Shane, Jake, Kate and Kenzie and great grandchildren Wyatt, Luke and Indie. Bernard is predeceased by Tom (father), Louisa (mother), Brenda (sister), Jimmy (brother), Joan (mother-in-law), Bernard (brother-in-law) and Mandy (niece).

 

Born November 16, 1944 in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England, he was raised in Newcastle, where he did all of his schooling. He was the 4th of 6 children. Bernard worked in construction and on the railway. He married Gloria on March 25, 1967 at St. Luke’s Church in Clayton. Bernard enrolled in a welding course which led to a move to Canada in January of 1975 with their three young children. He was employed at Alwinsal Potash mine (later PCS Potash Lanigan Division) until his retirement in 2003.

 

Bernie was a Boy Scout leader, hockey manager, soccer coach, baseball and fastball umpire, community fundraiser, town council member, volunteer ambulance attendant, Sunday School teacher, Lay Preacher, dinner theatre actor, school board member, Justice of the Peace, marriage commissioner and finally the Mayor of Lanigan.

 

Bernie enjoyed traveling to multiple countries, going on cruises and camping at many different lakes in western Canada. As a young man he enjoyed broomball, twilighter baseball and slo pitch. He also enjoyed following the local senior hockey team and umpiring minor baseball which he did for many years.

 

Family time for Bernie was the most important which included family trips to Waskesiu Lake, Florida and especially Hawaii. Bernie and Gloria spent many hours watching grandkids play hockey, ringette, baseball, dancing and soccer.

 

A service to celebrate Bernard’s life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 4:00 pm at Grace Westminster United Church, 505 10th St. East in Saskatoon.
