Obituary of Sheila Rodger

Sheila was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on April 25, 1934 and died in Saskatoon on August 13, 2015. She was educated as a teacher, taught from 1956-60 at Alloa Academy, came to Moose Jaw in 1960 and taught at Moose Jaw Tech, moved to Saskatoon, in 1962 and taught at Aden Bowman Collegiate from 1962-69 and again from 1971 till her retirement in 1990. From 1969-71 she taught for the D.N.D. Senior School in Baden-Sollingen, Germany. She taught Social Studies and Latin for the most part and really enjoyed her profession. As her maternal grandmother, two great-aunts on her mother’s side and one of her mother’s sisters and her mother were all teachers, she obviously came by teaching naturally! Sheila was a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women for many years and happily sorted books for and assisted at its annual Book Sale. She was a member of the Biography Group. She joined the Saskatoon Bridge Club in 1990 and became a Life Master and enjoyed playing about three times a week. She also enjoyed the exercise and companionship of the 8:00 am Aquacise class at Lakewood Pool. One of her great interests in life was travel. She travelled with friends or relatives or by herself and shared her enjoyment by showing them slides or videos. She also showed slides at the Frances Morrison and Mayfair Libraries. (Her teaching continued!) She also enjoyed reading many kinds of books: mysteries, historical novels, travel books, art books, and books about language. She loved listening to music, particularly classical and operatic, but she also like ABBA and Folk music. She enjoyed musical comedies on film and stage and before her retirement she helped sometimes with the Saskatoon Summer Players. She kept in close touch with her family in Britain – her siblings Helen Burnett (James) and Alan (Margaret) Rodger and her sister-in-law Jan (Gillies) Rodger and their descendants and also with her cousins Joan Davies, Arnold Sharp, Iain Scott and their families and also with friends in Edinburgh and elsewhere. She was very grateful for the friends she made here, particularly for the Treleaven, Novicki and Kerr families and for the people in her condo.
